Sunlight Names New GM
SUNLIGHT MOUNTAIN RESORT – Sept. 10, 2018 – Sunlight Mountain Resort has named Tom Hays as general manager. Hays has been the assistant general manager for base operations since 2012. He replaces Tom Jankovsky who is retiring after serving as general manager since 1985.
Hays began his career at Sunlight in 1982 working as a volunteer ski patroller. From 1992 to 1997 he served as the Avalanche Program Advisor for the Rocky Mountain Division of the National Ski Patrol and he continues to teach avalanche safety classes. In 2006, Hays began working full time at Sunlight as the mountain operations manager overseeing the ski patrol, buildings and grounds and marketing and events departments. He was promoted to Assistant GM six years later.
Hays grew up in Colorado Springs and is a third generation Colorado native. He learned to ski when he was 11, taking night lessons at the now defunct Ski Broadmoor in Colorado Springs. At 15 he served on the Junior Patrol, working throughout his high school years at Holiday Hills, a small ski area at the base of Pikes Peak. He attended Western State College in Gunnison, studying geology and business and continued patrolling at Monarch Ski Area.
He and his wife Marilyn Hays have lived in the Roaring Fork Valley since 1977. The couple has three children and eight grandchildren, all of whom either learned or are learning to ski and ride at Sunlight, with many “three generation” days on the mountain.
